Every member of your family has a unique history with weird and wonderful tales, forgotten family legends, and wisdom worth hearing. Armtree Films will help your family capture snapshots of your lineage into short films.
Hi, I’m Ashleigh, the founder of Armtree Films. Growing up, I gravitated towards conversations with a backstory. With my investigative nature, I enjoyed absolutely everything about my journalism degree. The challenge of gathering information, connecting with strangers, and sifting it all into one story simply makes me come alive. One thing led to another and I developed a specific passion to preserve family stories.
I have always been intrigued by my family roots. Perhaps even more so because both of my grandfathers passed away before I was born. Although I experienced an abundance of family love growing up, I became increasingly aware of the impact of not having my grandfathers around. I’ve heard stories about them, seen photos, and managed to paint mental pictures but I still searched for something in-depth or even video footage to offer up a better sense of who they were.
Our family archives just didn’t have what I was looking for. So, I had discussions with my grandmothers to find out more about my grandfathers. In the process, I not only learnt more about my grandfathers but I also got to know my grans in a completely new light. In hearing more about my family history, I then felt closer to my parents. This was surprising since we’re already close-knit. I realised that by virtue of us all being family I had just assumed I knew more than I actually knew.
I identified this lack of understanding of one’s lineage as something that other families may also struggle with. I was encouraged when hearing how other families loved the short films I made for them. I decided to properly apply my film and media background and turn this into something more. With the hope that other families can deepen their relationships through understanding more about their loved ones. And for future generations to have the opportunity to see and hear from who is on their family tree. I’m grateful that with these films, my great-grandchildren will get to hear from my grandparents. Perhaps they share the same quirky smile, or also love learning about the ocean. They may discover differences or see some significant similarities.
I believe in the value of listening. And the value of being heard. Hearing from people who have lived through multiple decades of life is humbling. It is also inspiring.
I understand the dynamics and sensitivities of family stories and would consider it an honour to curate an Armtree Film for your family.
