Strengthen Family Relationships with Armtree Films
As a parent, raising a family and navigating the complexities of family life can be challenging. From ageing parents to dealing with young children, families can experience different types of stress. However, research has shown that developing a strong family narrative is crucial for family happiness and resilience.
The single most important thing you can do for your family is to develop a strong family narrative. Psychologist Marshall Duke from Emory University and his colleague Robyn Fivush set out to test the hypothesis that the more children know about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem, and the more successful they believe their families function. They developed a measure called the “Do You Know?” scale, which asks children 20 questions about their family’s history and background.
The results showed that the “Do You Know?” scale was the best single predictor of children’s emotional health and happiness. The researchers went on to study families’ reactions to national trauma, such as 9/11, and found that the children who knew more about their families were more resilient and could moderate the effects of stress.
According to psychologists, every family has a unifying narrative that takes one of three shapes: the ascending family narrative, the descending narrative, and the most healthful narrative. The ascending narrative is about the progress and success of the family over time, while the descending narrative is about the decline of the family’s status. The most healthful narrative is a story of the family’s perseverance and survival despite difficulties.
Developing a strong family narrative helps children feel like they are part of a larger family and strengthens their sense of identity. So, take the time to share your family’s history and stories with your children and help them understand their place in the family narrative.
